Course Guide
Introduction
Welcome to OAN3157 Psychology! This subject aims to provide a general introduction to the basic topics in psychology. It introduces you to the concepts and implications of psychology in nursing. Furthermore, you will be introduced to the theories of personality development as well as the growth and development across the lifespan with their corresponding needs. This course would include areas on development, consciousness, motivation, emotion, personality, social behaviour, and other related areas. Emphasis will be placed on topics related to daily living.
Psychology is the science of behaviour and mental processes. It gives insight to "why we do what we do". Therefore, the course provides you with the foundational knowledge to understand your client so that you can provide effective individualised care. Besides this, on a personal note, it helps you be more empathetic, appreciate our differences and see the bigger picture in life.
In this course guide, I will share the course learning outcomes, the overview of the plan of the course and the assessments. I will also share the expectations of being a student in this course. It is our intent to make this learning experience both convenient and fun while achieving the intended outcomes.
Course Learning Outcomes
A course learning outcome (CLO) is the expectation of what you should be able to do by the end of the course. It provides a guide to both the educator as well as the student to focus on achieving the intended outcomes. For this course, we have two course learning outcomes (CLO) that can be categorised into two domains; cognitive and affective. The CLOs are as follows:
CLO1
Apply the various psychological perspectives, developmental theories and concepts to the given scenarios. (C3, PLO2)
CLO2
Demonstrate the ability to respect the differences in opinions, culture, personalities, behaviours and attitudes while working collaboratively in a group. (A3, PLO4)
Overview of the Teaching and Learning Plan
As an online course, we will use the Learning Management System (LMS) for all our communication, materials and assessments. We will have synchronous meeting via the LMS as well as Self Intructional Materials (SIM) to facilitate your learning and progress through the course. As an ODL learner, you are expected to be self directed. The SIM will provide you with a complete guide of the course materials and resources. Each topic will have topic learning outcomes followed by the lesson notes. Links to videos and other resources will be provided to support your learning process. You will also be given reading materials out of the SIM. At the end of each topic, there will be self check questions. Here you can test yourself. Review the notes and resources should you need to. Do note that that the main reference used and source of citations are from Core Concepts of Psychology by Zimbardo, Johnson and McCann. We will also have scheduled online meetings. Here we will have discussions and tutorials. For this course we will also have group work which will be included in our online meetings. We will have a total of seven (7) synchronous meetings over the semester.
Assessment
The assessments are planned as coursework which consists of group work and the summative assessment is a final academic essay. The breakdown of the weightage is as follows:
A. Continuous Assessment
Weightage (%)
Group Work
40%
B. Summative Assessment
Academic Essay
60%
Total
100%
Academic Essay
An assignment which consists of an academic essay of 2000 words based on a given topic/ scenario is required. The essay will need to be submitted to Turnitin and a similarity index of 20% or less is required. You will be required to submit a draft of the essay by Week 6 of the semester. I will read your work and provide you with constructive feedback for improvement by Week 7. Final submission will be by Week 9. This will be your summative assessment.
Group Work
For the coursework assessment, you will need to do a group project with your peers. Each group should consist of not more than 5 persons. The project can be a community project, a health promotion project, a Webinar or any feasible project within the time frame. This can be done virtually. You will need to brainstrom for ideas of the project and share your proposal during the online meeting. The purpose is for you to work in a team and during the process use your knowledge from the course to understand and respect each other. You will be graded using a rubrics on Interpersonal Skills.
Your Responsibility as an ODL Student
The concept of ODL is to be flexible and facilitate learning even while working. As an ODL student, you are expected to be self directed. Utilise the SIM provided and make full use of the resources (recorded lectures, videos, readings) provided. Attend synchronous meetings to facilitate discussion, clarification and guidance. You are expected to attend at least 85% of synchronous meeting. Should you miss the meeting, do refer to the recordings that will be uploaded after the meeting.
